The pair endured a miserable spell in charge of Leeds United.
Former Leeds United assistant Junior Lewis alongside Dave Hockaday
While other spells as manager of Leeds United have been shorter and less impressive, there is perhaps no other stint that attracts as much ridicule as the tenure of Dave Hockaday.
The respected coach’s only experience of being the number one before he sensationally became the first appointment of the Massimo Cellino era was a disappointing time in charge of non-league side Forest Green Rovers.
Hockaday collected just two wins from his time at Leeds
Therefore, few were surprised when the 58-year-old was axed after just six games at the helm. A League Cup win over fourth tier side Accrington and an incredibly fortunate victory over Middlesbrough proved not enough to save him as Brighton left Elland Road with three points before Watford thrashed them 4-1 and League One side Bradford dumped them out of the cup.
Hockaday has since spent time with Swindon Supermarine, Coventry City and Kidderminster Harriers in various roles. It was only with the latter that he served as a head coach, but once again, that spell reaped just two wins before his departure.
And his return to footballing obscurity is now complete as Gloucestershire Live reported that he is now the head of male football at a college’s academy.
Junior Lewis, during his time with Leicester City
But what became of his right-man Junior Lewis following their departure from Leeds?
The former midfielder had been coming to the end of his playing days when the Whites came calling. Though he had previously played in the top flight with Leicester, much of the journeyman’s career was spent playing in the lower leagues.
And it was eighth-tier side Hendon – with whom, Lewis had been a player/coach – that the 43-year-old left to link up with Hockaday two years ago.
Lewis now works with National League side Boreham Wood
Although it appears that Lewis took some time out of the game following his departure from Leeds, he is now back coaching at a very reasonable level.
According to National League side Boreham Wood’s official website, he joined the club last season as a coach working with the academy, and swiftly became one of the side’s first-team coaches.
It appears that Lewis has had a positive impact on the team. After a 19th place finish in the fifth tier last term, they currently sit 11th in the division, just three points off the play-off places.
And if they can continue to develop, it may not be too long before another Football League side, looking for a coach, takes a look at him.
