The West Ham United teenager will be hoping for chances next season, but the Hammers have been linked with the 20-year-old.
According to a report from the Mirror, West Ham United are interested in signing Birmingham City striker Che Adams this summer, and while the Hammers need more fire-power it could be bad news for a young scoring sensation already on their books.
Toni Martinez was scoring for fun with West Ham’s under-23 side, to such an extent that he earned a January loan move to Oxford United.
He quickly set about making his mark, scoring goals in the FA Cup against Middlesbrough and Newcastle United, and while his league exploits were less worthy of headlines – with one goal and two assists in 15 outings – around half of those appearances came from the bench.
Martinez would be the first to admit he is not yet ready to start week in, week out for West Ham, but Adams’ arrival would make things a lot more difficult.
The Mirror reports that Hammers manager Slaven Bilic also wants to bring Jermain Defoe to the London Stadium and that would be a great piece of business. However with Ashley Fletcher also challenging, Martinez could find two players in their early 20s are keeping him out of the spotlight.
He could yet rise to the challenge, or it may be a few more years before Martinez gets the chance to open his account for his parent club.
