If the Tottenham Hotspur defender misses the EFL Cup clash his future could be called into question?
Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer has been conspicuous by his absence so far this season, with teenage centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers getting the nod ahead of the Austrian for a place on the bench in recent weeks.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino recently told the Hertfordshire Mercury that the young American had simply seized his chance during pre-season, pushing the Austrian international down the pecking order as a result. But, tonight’s EFL Cup third round clash with Gillingham will go a long way to showing just how far Wimmer has slipped.
With Carter-Vickers expected to make his senior Tottenham debut this evening, it is widely believed that Wimmer will partner him, making his first appearance of the season in the process.
But there is an alternative, which would see the 23-year-old’s first-team exile continue, and if that is the case it would suggest things are more deeply rooted than first thought.
Of course this is mere speculation at this point, but on Saturday against Sunderland Pochettino opted not to select a centre-back on the bench at all, so if Wimmer really is fit and ready to go, his absence gets increasingly mysterious with each passing week.
