Allardyce could take over as Everton manager after all.
Steve Walsh’s Everton position is under review, according to a report in the Times this week.
The report claims Walsh – the director of football who oversaw Everton’s flawed summer recruitment drive, which totalled around £150 million – has had little involvement in the club’s search for a new manager after recommending Sam Allardyce, who claimed to have backed out of talks a fortnight ago.
Allardyce, though, is back in the running after Everton resumed communication with the former England manager on Monday, according to Sky Sports. So could Walsh stay put after all?
Not only did Walsh (allegedly) put forward the name of his former Newcastle United colleague – along with that of Craig Shakespeare, with whom Walsh also worked, at Leicester, to become assistant to Allardyce – Allardyce it seems is an admirer of the former schoolteacher.
“So much of Leicester’s success is about Steve Walsh,” said the 63-year-old in an interview with the Times last year.
With Everton appearing to have run out of viable options to succeed Ronald Koeman – evidenced by their (alleged) U-turn over Allardyce – the power arguably now lies with Allardyce. And agreeing to keep Walsh on board could be one of several sweeteners offered.
