Signing Andreas Samaris at Newcastle United would surely render Mo Diame unimportant.
Much to the annoyance of Newcastle United fans, Mo Diame was started in midfield again on Saturday as Rafael Benitez’s side went down 3-1 away to Chelsea.
The former Hull City midfielder had a shocker in the 3-0 defeat at home to Watford last weekend and Diame hardly strengthened his case with another poor showing at Stamford Bridge.
Thankfully, Newcastle are linked with another midfielder in January which would surely render Diame surplus to requirements – and fans should be delighted with the rumour.
O Jogo reported this week that United would renew an interest in Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris – a player who Benitez wanted for much of last summer but a transfer never materialised.
But surely a renewed attempt in January would demonstrate the Spaniard’s willingness to sign the Greece international and such a move would surely push down the pecking order – and maybe even out of the club.
The 30-year-old is not a bad footballer but you get the sense that he is not Premier League quality and offering the Senegalese – who has won promotion with two different clubs – to Championship clubs next month should be on the agenda if Samaris materialises this time.
At £4.5 million, Diame wasn’t cheap in the context of their summer spending, but they might just recoup a chunk of that by finding an avid fan in the second tier.
