Aston Villa fans on Twitter were divided after a report emerged linking them with Crystal Palace midfielder, James McCarthy.

The Daily Mail has claimed that Villa want to sign McCarthy for £5 million this summer, with his contract due to expire next June.

Villa are in need of some experience after surviving relegation on the last day of the Premier League season.

In regards to needing an experienced head, McCarthy would fit the bill because the 29-year-old has played 256 games in England’s top-flight during his career – for Wigan, Everton and now Palace [transfermarkt].

He was a regular in the middle of the park for Palace during the recently-concluded campaign, but sections of the Villa support are unsure about pushing for his signature.

McCarthy isn’t a big-name, nor did he have an outstanding season and that is seemingly off-putting for the Villa Park faithful.

But others see him as a signing where there is nothing to lose given the fee that Villa may have to pay for his services.
