Formula One’s long-absent Indian Grand Prix could be edging closer to a return, with fresh signals that past political and financial barriers may finally be removed.
The race, last held in 2013 at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, has remained a point of frustration for fans, given India’s vast market and growing motorsport interest.
Now, a shift in government thinking appears to be reopening the door.

Indian government eyes Formula One return by removing key obstacles
An update shared by Nikhil Naz outlined the current stance of authorities regarding a potential revival.
“The Indian govt is keen to bring the sport of Formula One back to the circuit in Greater Noida,” Naz wrote. “The plan is to remove all the unnecessary tax and red tape that had burdened the sport and the organisers and eventually led to the suspension of the Indian Grand Prix in 2013.”
The emphasis on cutting bureaucratic friction reflects lessons learned from the event’s previous collapse.
For Formula One, stability around taxation and logistics is essential before committing to any calendar expansion.
Why Formula One dropped the Indian Grand Prix after 2013
The Indian Grand Prix originally joined the Formula One calendar in 2011 under a long-term hosting agreement.
Despite positive feedback from drivers and fans, the event quickly became financially unsustainable.
The central issue was how the race was classified by local authorities. Formula One was treated as entertainment rather than a sporting event, triggering heavy taxation on teams, equipment, and operations.
Promoters faced mounting costs, delayed approvals, and legal uncertainty. These pressures ultimately led to the race being removed after the 2013 season, with a planned 2015 return later abandoned.
With officials now openly discussing the removal of those same barriers, the conditions that ended the Indian Grand Prix are being directly addressed.
If those reforms materialise, Formula One’s return to India would no longer be symbolic; it would be structurally viable.
