Gary Neville has claimed on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports (14/09/20 at 5:30 pm) that Liverpool’s defenders will be thinking ‘what the hell was that’ after playing Leeds on Saturday.

Even though the Premier League champions won 4-3, and are unbeaten in 60 league games at Anfield, it was perhaps one of the toughest tests they have faced to date.

The newly-promoted side displayed a fearless, aggressive and non-stop pressing approach against one of the best teams in Europe, and for long periods, their defence and midfield couldn’t cope.

Ex-Manchester United defender, Neville, was in awe at what Leeds produced and he claimed that Klopp’s players ‘wouldn’t have had a clue’ about what happened after the game was over.

“Liverpool haven’t been beaten at home for 60 matches,” Neville told MNF. “And those defenders would have come off that pitch on Saturday of Liverpool and thought ‘what the hell was that?! What was that I just played?’

“They wouldn’t have had a clue what happened. They wouldn’t. There’s no shape to that game. There’s nothing you would ordinarily recognise in a game of football. It was brilliant.”

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

It’s a sign of intent from Leeds and a message to the rest of the league that they are back in the promised land.

For many, who have watched the Yorkshire club in the Championship, this isn’t a surprise because there is only one genius behind all of this – Marcelo Bielsa.

His technically-gifted footballing brain, fearless attitude, seemingly gung-ho approach and eagle-eyed ways has resulted in the club now being in such a formidable position.
