Trevor Sinclair has claimed that ‘it would be huge’ if Newcastle could secure the signing of Bruno Guimaraes, as he told talkSPORT.
The former England international was reacting to the suggestion that Newcastle are closing in on the midfielder’s signature from Lyon.
David Ornstein, of The Athletic, has claimed that Eddie Howe is edging closer to bringing in his third signing of the January window, as Guimaraes is scheduled to undergo a medical.
If those in the St James’ Park boardroom can get this one over the line, then their relegation rivals might just be waving them goodbye as they surge forward in the Premier League table.
It’s signings such as this one that sends out signals of intent from the North East club, as Sinclair reacted to those Guimaraes rumours.
“I think it would be huge,” said Sinclair. “I think it’s what the Geordies need.
“Obviously bringing in Trippier, we have had our debate about that. I thought he was coming back for family reasons and he wants to get back to the Premier League.
“Simon (Jordan) thought it was all about the money. I thought it was all about the glory and the re-build of Newcastle.
“You are bringing in a huge name and name that other clubs are interested in, which, of course, Guimaraes is. And if they could get that over the line, then it could be the domino effect to get one or two more in.”
If Guimaraes is signed, sealed and delivered, then Newcastle need to go all-out to get a centre-back through their doors.
Out of all the troubles they have endured, it’s their backline that has been the most problematic.
It’s not a case of stacking their defence with player after player from the transfer market.
But adding quality rather than quantity at centre-back and trying to bring in someone that can help elevate all those around them.
