Declan Gallagher may be an ‘avid Celtic fan’ but the Motherwell defender is not the man to take the Scottish Premiership champions to the next level, Scot McDonald tells the Celtic Huddle Podcast.

Just because you have green and white blood flowing through your veins, that does not necessarily mean you are guaranteed to succeed at Parkhead.

Just ask Shane Duffy.

The boyhood Celtic fan fulfilled a lifelong dream when he moved to Glasgow on loan from Brighton over the summer but, so far, his ill-fated spell north of the border has been blighted by a string of high-profile blunders.

While there could be no doubts about Gallagher’s commitment to the Celtic cause, former Hoops ace McDonald wonders whether he has the requisite quality to thrive where Duffy has failed.

“He’s no-nonsense as we know. In terms of bringing Celtic to the next level though, that’s questionable for me,” explained the former Australia international.

“He’s in a struggling Motherwell side just now.”

McDonald does believe, however, that the 29-year-old would be a popular addition amongst a disillusioned Celtic fanbase.

“Certainly someone like Declan Gallagher gets it – he’s been at Celtic before, he’s an avid Celtic fan and he’d be desperate to put the green and white on.

“I think that’s what fans are asking for right now especially. The commitment of the players and what it means to these fans. They want to see people wearing the jersey that mean something to them also.”

As reported by the Record, Gallagher is dreaming of a return to Celtic this summer, a decade after he was released by his boyhood club.

The Scotland international could be a free agent in a matter of months, although Motherwell look destined to trigger a one-year extension in his contract over the next few weeks.
