Newcastle United are said to be close to appointing Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce may have some making up to do with Newcastle United fans if he takes the job, after what he said about them in 2010.
Bruce was in charge at Sunderland at the time, and he was the subject of some abusive chants from the Newcastle supporters during the Tyne-Wear derby.
The St. James’ Park crowd could be heard singing: “Oh what can it mean to a sad Mackem b*****d and a s**t football team.”
And the songs clearly riled Bruce, who suggested that Newcastle supporters lacked class.
“I was down the tunnel by then but I did hear about it,” he said to the Daily Star, after his Sunderland side were beaten 5-1 by Newcastle.
“It was probably typical of their etiquette. Hopefully, we can repeat the same dosage.’’
Bruce’s comments were likely to have come in the heat of the moment, but they are set to give his doubters even more ammunition.
Newcastle fans are not pleased about the potential appointment of Bruce, as there is a feeling that he is a major downgrade on Rafael Benitez.
