Leeds United are said to be considering appointing Steve Bruce to replace Paul Heckingbottom.

Steve Bruce told the Birmingham Mail that he believed Leeds United were potential title winners back in December.

The Daily Star claim that Bruce is on Leeds’ managerial wishlist, with Paul Heckingbottom’s future uncertain.

Heckingbottom has struggled since taking charge at Elland Road, with the Whites slipping away from the play offs and finishing in mid-table.

And Bruce is now said to be an option for Leeds, who are keen to bring in the veteran boss.

Whether Bruce would entertain the idea of making the switch from Aston Villa to Leeds remains to be seen, but there is no doubting that the 57-year-old boss rates the Whites’ squad.

He said to the Birmingham Mail: “I expect Leeds to be there or there abouts.

“They’ve got some very good players.

“For me, they’re one of 10 teams who can still mount a challenge.

“They had a wonderful start and then a blip which is normal.

“Wolves are the team that everyone has to beat.

“But I expect Leeds to be there too.”

When Bruce made the comments, Leeds were on the outskirts of the play offs, and still had some hopes of promotion.

However, it wasn’t to be for Leeds this term, as they fell well short once again.

Leeds have not played Premier League football since 2004, and have a lot of work to do, if they are to be turned into genuine promotion contenders next season.
