What Sir Nick Faldo has been told about LIV Golf: ‘So many things are a mess’

Sir Nick Faldo has been one of the most outspoken critics of LIV Golf over the past few years.

Faldo possesses a hugely impressive golfing resume, with 43 worldwide victories to his name, including six major championships.

During his prime, the Englishman was an uncompromising character on the golf course.

And since Sir Nick Faldo retired from playing, he has maintained that attitude away from the course, albeit in much more of an amiable manner.

So who better to ask about the failings of LIV Golf than the 69-year-old?

Nick Faldo criticized LIV Golf and its players after the likes of Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm struggled at The Masters in April.

And that criticism was nothing new.

Back in 2025, Faldo told talkSPORT in the UK how the money handed out on LIV Golf presented a very big problem.

“Everything is about money,” Faldo said.

“I think the average person would say, ‘hang on a minute, you’re waltzing around the bloody field hitting a golf ball and it’s preposterous it’s out of hand‘.

“It’s not good sport, it’s bloody tough. I think when you’re on a fail free tour, you can’t fail. It makes you go soft, I think some of those players have gone soft.”

And now the six-time major winner has let loose at the way that LIV Golf operates once again.

Faldo is always good for a few interesting lines concerning any hot topics in the game of golf.

So when the Englishman sat down to speak with Today’s Golfer, he was always going to provide a no-holds-barred response.

Faldo was asked to highlight some of the biggest mistakes LIV Golf has made since its inception back in 2022.

“So many things are a mess,” the 69-year-old said.

“They all got excited about the shotgun start, but I have a friend who’s in TV production, and he says, ‘For one minute I’ve got 18 golfers on the tee hitting a ball, and then I’ve got 18 golfers walking, and then they’re all hitting again‘.

“This is a television nightmare.

“And they say, ‘Don’t blink or you’ll miss it’. Well, yes, you did miss it, because you watched one shot and you missed 17 others.“

Faldo makes a great point there.

The other issue with the shotgun start is that the leaders tee off at the same time as the players who are in the last three positions in the field.

The pressure is totally different when you head out three hours after the middle of the pack, as someone almost always makes a charge from five or six shots back.

LIV Golf has already done away with their 54-hole format, making the change to 72-hole events last summer in order to help them obtain world ranking points.

There is no doubt in my mind that they would do things very differently if they had the chance to go back to 2022 and start again.

Nick Faldo in shock at LIV Golf’s biggest mistake

Faldo believes the powers that be over at LIV Golf made one huge mistake from the outset.

The six-time major champion told Today’s Golfer how making unknown golfers ‘mega rich’ was not the smartest move.

“Sure, you wanted a boatload of cash, and you picked the right spot for that. But it’s going to be meaningless if it all collapses,“ Faldo exclaimed.

“They’ve wrecked their reputations. And now they’re all clambering to come back and compete again. Because that’s the whole challenge of sport – to push yourself a little further.”

“I cannot believe they sat there and thought it would be great to make unknown golfers mega rich.

“What the heck? I don’t get it.”

At best, LIV Golf will operate with vastly decreased prize pots next year and at worst, they will fold entirely.
