Shaquille O’Neal once stunned Michael Phelps in a swimming race, but he would regret what he said after the race was over.

Shaquille O’Neal is a basketball icon — a four-time NBA champion, MVP, and one of the most dominant athletes in history. But in 2009, he decided to test his power in a completely different arena.

That’s when Shaq challenged Olympic legend Michael Phelps — then the most decorated swimmer in the world — to a race for his reality show.

Shaquille O’Neal stunned Michael Phelps in a race but showed him respect

The race between Shaquille O’Neal and Michael Phelps took place at Loyola University Maryland’s Mangione Aquatic Center.

To even the odds, Shaq was given a major advantage: he would swim 25 meters to Phelps’ 50. Even with that head start, few thought O’Neal would win. But he held Phelps off to win the first race.

The crowd erupted, and the big man celebrated the unthinkable — a win over the greatest swimmer alive.

“This man is wild! I know we sit there and watch him on TV. But I’m in a pool with him. Wow! But I’m not nervous. I’m just giving him his props! Two more races left.”

Phelps regrouped and went on to win the next two heats — including a relay and a freestyle sprint — to secure the overall victory.

But even in defeat, Shaq’s early performance showed how seriously he took the challenge.

Shaquille O’Neal showed his dominance isn’t bound to one sport

For Shaquille O’Neal, his reality series wasn’t about winning; it was about testing his limits and showing his competitive spirit outside the NBA.

He faced athletes like Serena Williams, Oscar De La Hoya, and Albert Pujols, each time proving that confidence, curiosity, and charisma could carry him anywhere.

His race with Phelps captured that perfectly. He didn’t need medals or records to earn respect. O’Neal just wanted to test himself against the best of the best, even as his athletic powers were in decline.

By diving into a pool with the greatest Olympian of all time — and stealing a win in the process — Shaq reminded the world that true greatness isn’t confined to one sport.
