Aston Villa are interested in bringing Manchester United backup goalkeeper Sergio Romero this summer, according to the Daily Star.
However, the Sun report that a potential stumbling block comes in the form of Romero’s wages.
Spotrac claim Romero is on £70,000 per week at Old Trafford.
That’s a high figure, but apparently affordable for Villa, given FourFourTwo‘s report last month that Jack Grealish had been made a £100,000-a-week contract offer to stay.
It might be that Villa turn their back on Romero on those wages, but we’ve got three reasons he’s worth the money for Dean Smith’s side.
Never let United down
Romero has never been afforded a regular run of games at United, but has never let the club down.
He comes in, does his job like he’s never been away and waits for his next chance.
If that’s how good Romero is, under the pressure of one of the world’s biggest clubs, when he’s not even got a run of games under his belt, he’ll be even better when he has.
A calm, understated goalkeeper who doesn’t make mistakes is worth paying for.

Point to prove
Romero has been squeezed out fairly unceremoniously at Old Trafford.
Dean Henderson has been recalled to challenge David de Gea for the gloves, leaving Romero with little choice but to find a move.
The Argentine should have a point to prove to the club which didn’t ever promote him above David de Gea, even when his form started to crumble.
That would only be Villa’s gain.

International experience
Romero has 96 caps for Argentina. You don’t do that if you’re not a top player.
You also don’t get that far in your career without having some worthwhile experience to pass onto Villa’s younger players.
Villa don’t have many players in their ranks who have been there and done it at the highest level for so long.
It can only be a good thing to add a player like that to the ranks.
Perhaps if Villa are concerned about the wages, it would be best not to offer more than a one or two year contract to a player who is 33.
But goalkeepers have such longevity that Romero’s age is less of a problem than it might be with regards an outfield player.
