Scottie Scheffler caused plenty of controversy during the opening round of The Memorial Tournament.

Scheffler posted a round of one-over par 73 on day one at The Memorial, but his behavior on the par-three 16th hole stole the headlines.

The 29-year-old world number one’s frustrations boiled over after he found the water to the left of the green with his tee shot.

And Scottie Scheffler‘s caddie, Ted Scott, incurred the wrath of the four-time major champion after his mistake on day one of The Memorial.

Scheffler spoke out after his opening round at The Memorial, and revealed exactly why he was so frustrated after finding the water off the 16th tee.

He insisted that he was hitting good golf shots all day and simply wasn’t rewarded for them.

What Scottie Scheffler did after his opening round at The Memorial

Scheffler has cut a frustrated figure on the golf course on numerous occasions throughout the 2026 season.

The world number one from Dallas, Texas, clearly hasn’t had his best stuff this year.

However, the incredible set of results that he has recorded are testament to his unbelievable ability to compete without his ‘A’ game.

He is number one on the FedEx Cup standings as of now, and that tells us all we need to know about his competitive nature, given the fact that he certainly hasn’t been firing on all cylinders.

Perhaps the reason why Scheffler has been the best golfer in the world for more than three years now is his unrivalled work ethic.

So perhaps it should be no surprise that he hit the driving range as soon as he finished his opening round at Muirfield Village.

Paul Hodowanic, a staff writer for the PGA Tour, posted the below video to his X account on Thursday.

Despite Scheffler suggesting that he wasn’t adequately rewarded for the sheer amount of good golf shots he hit, he quite clearly wasn’t satisfied with his performance.

Scottie Scheffler struggles at The Memorial after uncharacteristic round

The world number one just made so many unnecessary errors on a golf course that simply doesn’t allow lapses of any kind.

From the 10th all the way through to the final hole, Scheffler hit one uncharacteristic golf shot after another.

He hit some incredibly poor wedge shots on the 14th and 15th holes, while his tee shot on the par-three 12th was nowhere near his best.

Scottie Scheffler clearly has some issues he needs to straighten out ahead of day two at The Memorial.

He actually drove the ball very well indeed, but his irons and wedge game were nowhere near good enough.

A lot of work is needed if he is to win The Memorial for the third consecutive year.
