Christian Horner’s 20-year run as Red Bull CEO and team principal came to a sudden close last week, marking the end of an era for the team.

He first took charge back in 2005, becoming the youngest team principal in F1 history. Under his leadership, Red Bull picked up eight drivers’ titles with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, along with six constructors’ championships.

Red Bull didn’t give any advance notice of Horner’s dismissal, but it happened during a season where their performance had dropped off. They’re already 288 points behind McLaren halfway through the year, and Verstappen has already said he’s not in the title race.

Verstappen was one of those pushing for Horner to go, as he looked for changes within the team. The Dutchman has grown more frustrated lately, especially with ongoing rumours tying him to Mercedes.

The announcement caught everyone off guard, including staff at Red Bull headquarters. Horner’s farewell was reportedly emotional, with colleagues giving him a standing ovation as he said his goodbyes.

Christian Horner’s influence at Red Bull was more about people than technical details

While he may not have had much of a technical impact on Red Bull’s success on track, he played a significant role off it. Horner shaped the model of the team and kept everyone motivated and supported, which played a key role in their meteoric rise.

Speaking via Newstalk Daily, journalist Thomas Maher says Horner’s ‘greatest power’ was empowerment and how he created ‘tremendous loyalty’ in Milton Keynes. It was the ‘number one thing’ that came up when speaking to those within Red Bull.

“I think from speaking to people within the team, his greatest power was empowerment,” he said.

“So while Christian may not have been the most technical-minded person, he didn’t design the cars that won all the championships.

“But he was very good at getting the right people into the right jobs and allowing them to flourish in those roles.

“And the thing is, he created a very stable team for almost 20 years, there was very little movement, and that’s kind of the number one thing you hear when you talk to people about Christian Horner.

“He commanded tremendous loyalty.”

While his technical influence was limited, his impact away from the track was substantial. Horner helped shape the team’s culture, keeping people motivated and focused, which contributed to their rise in F1.

Journalist Thomas Maher told Newstalk Daily that Horner’s “greatest power” was how he empowered others and built loyalty within the team. It was a common theme when speaking to those inside Red Bull.

“I think from speaking to people within the team, his greatest power was empowerment,” he said.

What will Christian Horner do next?

Even though Christian Horner has stepped down from his operational role at Red Bull Racing, he remains under contract with them until 2030. However, unlike many in similar situations, there’s no gardening leave clause preventing him from talking to other teams immediately.

The 51-year-old is expected to stay involved in Formula 1. Just days after leaving Red Bull Racing, multiple teams were already being mentioned as potential destinations for him.
