‘What Rangers need’: Gerrard tipped to sign Premier League ace

Rangers have been tipped to sign Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram by Tam McManus, who tells PLZ Soccer the Premier League ace could be Steven Davis’s successor at Ibrox.

Lundstram may have been one of the biggest success stories of Sheffield United’s remarkable return to the top flight last season, but that doesn’t mean the former Everton youngster is guaranteed a place in Chris Wilder’s first XI.

Far from it.

The arrival of Sander Berge in January and the emergence of Ben Osborn post-lockdown meant Lundstram started only one of Sheffield United’s final seven games of the campaign.

Ethan Ampadu has since joined Chris Wilder’s squad on loan from Chelsea, while Reading talisman John Swift could still be unveiled at Bramall Lane before the transfer window closes in early October.

With Lundstram seemingly unwilling to extend a contract due to expire next summer, Sheffield United may be forced to cash in. Rangers are definitely showing an interest in a Liverpool-born midfielder who idolises Steven Gerrard (Star).

“I think he is what Rangers need (but) whether they get him, who knows?” says former Scottish Premiership ace McManus, who believes Lundstram can replace a 35-year-old in Gerrard’s ranks.

“Steven Davis obviously is coming to the end of his career.

“He has been a great servant but I think Rangers will be looking to try to replace him and get somebody in there besides the likes of Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara.

“(Lundstram) is out of contract in a year’s time. (Maybe) they can try to do something, maybe sign a pre-contract?”

Speaking to Yorkshire Live in August, Wilder made it clear Lundstram would find himself out of favour if he wasn’t committed to the cause, adding the long-serving enforcer still hadn’t “signed a contract”.
