Liverpool hammered Leeds United 6-0 at Anfield tonight.
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both scored a double as Liverpool put their Yorkshire counterparts to the sword in ruthless fashion.
But the star of the show? Potentially Joel Matip.
The Cameroon international doubled the Reds’ lead in the first half following a surging run, along with a beautiful finish that would make you wonder if he was really a central defender.
Matip, who earns £100,000 per week, is no stranger to these sort of adventurous forays into enemy territory and they have, in the past, come close to yielding goals.
On this occasion, however, he finally struck gold and here’s how Everton WSL star Izzy Christiansen reacted to the goal:
She told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Wow. What on earth is Joel Matip doing up there? No one tracks him. It’s a finish any of Liverpool’s front three would be proud about.”
Title race
Pep Guardiola might’ve been watching behind a sofa somewhere in Manchester tonight.
Okay maybe not, but he certainly will now be worried about Liverpool – if he wasn’t before.
Jurgen Klopp’s outfit are only three points behind top-of-the-table Manchester City and with both having played 26 matches now, it’s very much all to play for in the Premier League.
Fascinatingly, England’s top two still have to play each other and if it’s as you were on April 10, with City still boasting a three-point advantage, it’ll be a massively intriguing contest at the Etihad.
The Citizens’ defeat by Tottenham Hotspur – who incidentally lost 1-0 at Burnley tonight – last weekend has blown the title race wide open.
And Liverpool, led by Matip, certainly took full advantage tonight.
