West Ham United boss Manuel Pellegrini may well be on the look out for a new defensive midfielder this summer.

Gary Medel of Chile controls the ball during the international friendly match between Mexico and Chile at La Corregidora Stadium on October 16, 2018 in Queretaro, Mexico.

According to a report in Turkey on Fanatik, West Ham United are close to signing Gary Medel from Besiktas.

West Ham are likely to be interested in signing a new defensive midfielder this summer, as they only have limited options in the position right now.

West Ham are set to sell Pedro Obiang, which could leave Manuel Pellegrini with just Declan Rice and Carlos Sanchez to pick from.

While Rice remains a key player for West Ham, Sanchez has never shown that he is capable of playing regularly for the Hammers ever since he arrived last summer.

It seems that Medel could now be signed to strengthen Pellegrini’s options in the centre of the pitch.

The addition of a 31-year-old, who wasn’t a roaring success in his last spell in the Premier League with Cardiff City, may not be particularly exciting for West Ham fans.

However, his former boss at Cardiff was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is now in charge of Manchester United.

Solskjaer was always a big fan of the Chilean international’s talents. He said to Wales Online: “Gary is a top, top player who deserves to be playing at a higher level than the Championship and he has proven that.”

And Solskjaer’s positive words about Medel may help to convince West Ham supporters that the transfer could still work out for them.
