Leeds United’s seventh signing could have a direct impact on the young midfielder.
Following the news that Pablo Hernandez has signed for Leeds United – and that Whites manager Garry Monk intends to use him as a number 10 – it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Alex Mowatt.
The 21-year-old could soon be the last of the much heralded quartet to still be at Elland Road, if Charlie Taylor follows Sam Byram and Lewis Cook out the door this summer, but with just a year remaining on his own deal there is no guarantee Mowatt will be there for the long haul.
His best position is as a central attacking midfielder, operating behind the front players and allowed to shoot and create at will.
However, if Hernandez is tasked with that role, Mowatt could find himself fighting for a first-team spot just when his future is at its foggiest.
An in-form Mowatt is a wonderful option for Leeds, and Monk will need all the players in his first-team squad at times during a long Championship campaign.
The problem is, if Hernandez hits the ground running the youngster could be little more than a bit-part player and at this stage of his career that is not really an option.
