John Harbaugh has surfaced as a leading candidate to become the Miami Dolphins’ next head coach, but the club has made it clear that any agreement will come with firm conditions.

The Dolphins are building around a new leadership model that puts the general manager fully in charge of football decisions, and that’s non-negotiable.

Following their split from Mike McDaniel, Miami is determined to reset its organizational structure. The front office wants clear lines of authority, with the GM overseeing all personnel matters and the head coach focused solely on the team.

Harbaugh, known for his strong leadership style, would have to buy into this setup if he wants the job.

Miami Dolphins are prioritizing hiring a GM over a new coach

As reported by Jeff Darlington, “Here’s the deal: If Harbaugh isn’t cool with the GM that the Dolphins hire, it’s just not going to be a match. That’s something the Dolphins are willing to accept.

“Yes, they are interested in Harbaugh. But the Dolphins are prioritizing the GM search over the head coaching search. That’s the structure they desire.”

This approach reflects owner Stephen Ross’s desire to avoid the power struggles that have hurt the club in the past.

By putting the general manager in charge of personnel, Miami hopes to create long-term alignment between the front office and coaching staff.

While Harbaugh’s experience is impressive, the Dolphins clearly want a coach who fits into their system, not one who shapes it around himself.

John Harbaugh joining Miami Dolphins is ‘still on the table’

Darlington added, “That said, they have four very respected and viable candidates up for the job, one of which has a strong history with Harbaugh (Chad Alexander). So it’s all still on the table.”

This suggests Miami is keeping its options open, with several names still under consideration. Chad Alexander’s history with Harbaugh could help the coach’s case if both sides see eye-to-eye on how the club should be run.

But if Harbaugh isn’t comfortable with the terms, the Dolphins seem ready to look elsewhere. Their focus on structure marks a clear break from past approaches, one built on ensuring the front office leads every major decision.

Harbaugh’s choice could shape the direction of the franchise heading into the new NFL season.

For now, both sides appear to be weighing their options carefully, knowing the outcome will have long-term implications for Miami football.
