The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder had interest from Premier League clubs and Celtic before his loan to Aston Villa.

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Josh Onomah will not return to Aston Villa next season, irrespective of which division the Villans are in – according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 20-year-old has played 28 times for the Villans this campaign but lost his place earlier this month, and it is unlikely his recent form will convince Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino to elevate his status in 2018-19.

So what next for Onomah?

First things first, let’s not write off the Spurs academy product, who Pochettino described as being a potential first team player at the start of the campaign, and who continues to be picked regularly for a talented England Under-21 side.

This is, after all, his first prolonged spell of senior football. And just because he hasn’t torn up trees at Aston Villa shouldn’t put other clubs off a similar arrangement.

Besides, having seen what it’s all about at this season, Onomah, in theory, will be far better equipped to attack another loan spell next season.

Where could he go?

Scottish champions Celtic and Premier League sides Brighton and Huddersfield were among those credited with interest in Onomah during last summer’s transfer window.

Each have strengthened in his position since then, however, with Celtic landing Oliver Ntcham, Brighton; Pascal Groß and Huddersfield; Alex Pritchard – Onomah’s former Tottenham teammate – on permanent deals.

On current form, top level suitors could be scarce, so – gun to the head – another Championship stint looks the most likely outcome, at a club with perhaps less competition than Aston Villa.

That said, the growing trend of young Englishmen flocking to German football is something to keep an eye on.
