Taylor reportedly wants to leave Leeds with West Brom interested, but with a new deal on the table and possible tribunal, things become very complicated.

The future of Charlie Taylor at Leeds United remains in the balance, with the defender out of contract this summer and seemingly high on the wishlist of some Premier League clubs.

Taylor caused outrage among Leeds fans on the final day of the season when it was revealed by manager Garry Monk that the left-back refused to play.

That looked to be the final straw as an expected move to West Bromwich Albion – as reported by the Birmingham Mail – moved closer, yet the 23-year-old has now been offered a new two-year deal by the Whites.

So what happens next?

As Taylor is under the age of 24, even if he moves on a free transfer the club he joins are still obliged to pay a compensation fee if Leeds have offered a new contract before the expiration of his current one. Hence the two-year deal.

If Taylor does sign it then happy days (although the Elland Road faithful may take a little longer to forgive him). If he doesn’t then unless the two clubs can agree a fee between themselves, it will go to a tribunal where it will be determined how much the full-back is worth.

This means that West Brom, or any other interested party, would have to pay the amount the tribunal comes up with, something which manager Tony Pulis says rules the Baggies out.

“If it’s going to go to tribunal, we don’t know what the price is and I think that takes us out of the game,” Pulis was quoted by the Express.

“You could go to tribunal and they could put an extraordinary amount of money on it and you’re stuck with it.

“It’s a risk that, at this moment, is not worth taking.”

This makes Taylor’s future more complicated than it perhaps seemed on the face of it. Unless Leeds agree to a fee outside of a tribunal, or a club are willing to take a financial hit at one without knowing the cost, the defender could be stuck in limbo or have to swallow his pride and stick with Garry Monk’s men.
