Callum McManaman’s career is at a crossroads; West Bromwich Albion don’t want him and the chances are neither do Sheffield Wednesday.

The winger spent the second half of the season on loan with the Owls from West Brom, whose manager is set for talks with the Yorkshire side about a permanent summer transfer, according to reports last week.

McManaman barely featured for Wednesday, however, through a combination of niggles, the form of Ross Wallace and perhaps something else, making a return to Hillsborough somewhat unlikely.

So could the Owls’ Championship rivals Derby County seize the initiative?

Before losing his way at the Hawthorns, McManaman was one of the most highly-rated wingers in the country – let’s not forget he was named man of the match in the 2013 FA Cup final.

There’s certainly no shortage at Pride Park, although few would miss Nick Blackman or Abdoul Camara – perhaps, too, Johnny Russell or Ikechi Anya. Tom Ince remains the Rams’ talisman, although reports suggest he could be sold to raise funds – thus opening the door to a new arrival.

Wednesday have first refusal, according to West Brom boss Tony Puils, however, don’t bet on a permanent transfer going ahead. Should the Owls pass up on McManaman, he is likely to be offered around the Championship, with his contract up at the end of next season. And Derby could be near the top of the pile.
