The Los Angeles Lakers were flat, frustrated, and beaten soundly on Christmas night.
A 119–96 loss to the Houston Rockets exposed everything that has gone wrong in their recent slide. It was their third straight defeat, a night when the energy dipped early and never recovered.
The only flicker of optimism came from Austin Reaves, who exited with a sore left calf but appeared to avoid a serious injury.
The mood around Crypto.com Arena said it all. The Rockets dominated the boards, the Lakers looked disconnected, and even LeBron James struggled to ignite a spark.

Austin Reaves walked off without support after a calf scare
The one encouraging update came from ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, who noticed Reaves after his early exit from the game.
“Austin Reaves left the arena without the assistance of any brace or boot of crutch for his left leg. He told reporters ‘Merry Christmas’ as he made his exit.
“JJ Redick said he didn’t have further information on Reaves’ left calf at this time,” McMenamin reported.
It was a small but welcome sign for a team that needed something positive. Reaves had scored 12 points before sitting out the second half.
The Lakers have relied heavily on Reaves’ versatility this season. He creates ball movement, defends multiple positions, and gives them stability in the half-court. When he left the game, the offense lost rhythm, and the defense lost communication.
For a roster already dealing with fatigue, any concern involving one of their most reliable rotation players brings extra worry. Still, walking out under his own power suggested the issue was manageable, not severe.
A not-quite-healthy Austin Reaves changes everything for LA Lakers
Reaves’ impact often shows in the little details; extra passes, help defense, and spacing that frees up shooters. When he is less mobile, those small contributions fade fast.
LeBron James and Luka Doncic can carry stretches, but both rely on teammates like Reaves to connect possessions and sustain tempo. Without him at full speed, the Lakers’ spacing tightens, their second unit loses creativity, and transition defense suffers.
That drop-off was clear against Houston. The Rockets moved the ball freely, dominated rebounding, and outpaced Los Angeles in every hustle category.
If Reaves stays active but short of full fitness, the team’s chemistry and energy will continue to fluctuate. His influence extends beyond numbers; it anchors effort and flow.
The Lakers need his energy and composure back quickly because without him at his best, their margin for error shrinks fast.
