West Ham United are enduring a torrid season so far and a damning statistic reveals what might have been.

The Hammers are one point and one place above the relegation zone after a woeful record of seven defeats from their opening 12 games this season.

The latest came at White Hart Lane on Saturday as they threw away a 2-1 lead with just minutes left to lose 3-2 to bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

There are plenty of statistics around which highlight just how bad Slaven Bilic’s second season in East London has been.

For example West Ham have the second worst defensive record in the league with only Hull – a squad thrown together last minute and in complete disarray for much of the season – conceding more.

Then there’s the fact that not one of Bilic’s strikers has scored a single goal this season 18 competitive games in.

But perhaps the most damning statistic of all to emerge after the defeat to Spurs is the fact that the Hammers are the number one team when it comes to squandering leads.

In fact Bilic’s side have now thrown away more points from winning positions than any other side costing them eight points from 12 games.

That would have seen the London Stadium side sitting pretty in eighth place, level on 19 points with their next opponents Manchester United in sixth and just six points off the Champions League spots.

The Hammers were 2-0 up against Watford and lost 4-2, they were beating Stoke 1-0 but conceded late on to draw and now they have thrown away another three points against Spurs.

In fact the Hammers could even be sat in sixth place on 20 points as they were drawing away at Chelsea and conceded a late goal to lose 2-1 which cost them another point.

It is tormenting for the club’s fans who are fast losing patience with the club after a woeful summer of transfer business translated into equally poor performances on the pitch souring the big move to the Olympic Stadium.
