Another day and yet another defeat for Chelsea, this time losing to Championship side, Middlesbrough.

It’s only half-time, in terms of Mauricio Pochettino’s side having the chance to turn this League Cup semi-final around, but the misery isn’t ending for the struggling London club.

One man who has had a horrid time ever since he secured a transfer to Chelsea has been, Enzo Fernandez.

The 22-year-old joined on a high for £106.8 million after winning the 2022 World Cup and also winning the Young Player award.

Yet, fast forward to the present, and the Chelsea midfielder is getting bantered by the Middlesbrough supporters when being substituted.

After 63 minutes at the Riverside Stadium, and Chelsea struggling to break down a resilient and well-organised Michael Carrick side, Enzo Fernandez was subbed after having very little impact.

But as he walked off, there were chants of ‘what a waste of money’ from the home crowd, which was just rubbing salt into the wounds of a player who has had a year to forget in England.

Enzo Fernandes’s struggles

The issue here is that the World Cup-winning star has shown very little in the middle of the park since joining the club. What type of midfielder is he exactly?

Is he someone who can control a game? Sitting in a number six position? Needs to play further forward and score goals? Carry the ball from deep? Has defensive attributes?

He showed an all-round quality when he was in Argentina colours, but that has been missing at Stamford Bridge.

And that’s another big-money player at Chelsea who looks lost and further from the player that was initially signed back in January.
