Newcastle are reportedly leading the race to sign Tottenham defender Joe Rodon in January, with Eddie Howe’s side eager to bring the Welsh international in on loan.

According to the Telegraph, the Toon boss is eager to improve Newcastle’s backline in the winter transfer window, with Rodon a top target for the Magpies in the New Year.

As well as Rodon, Kieran Trippier is reportedly on Newcastle’s radar with the Atletico Madrid fullback set to depart Spain after just 18 months with the La Liga giants. Burnley defender and England international James Tarkowski is also a target for the Toon, as per the Telegraph.

Despite arriving at Tottenham with a big reputation, Rodon has hardly featured for the north London club since his 2020 move to the Premier League side from Swansea.

As per the report, Tottenham are open to letting the 24-year-old leave on a short-term with first-team opportunities likely to be sparse in 2022. Spurs were this week eliminated from the UEFA Europa Conference League, meaning they will only play domestic football from January.

Indeed, Rodon has impressed when given the chance for Spurs, and the centre-back could make for a good short-term option for Newcastle in January, who desperately needed added quality at the back.

The defender could find his feet with Newcastle and add stability at the back that might fire Howe’s side away from the relegation zone, and on social media, supporters are hopeful that a deal can be done for Rodon.
