Rio Ferdinand has shared an unexpected and glowing assessment of Indian cricket star Shubman Gill, offering rare insight into an off-field meeting that clearly left an impression.

The Manchester United legend focused less on achievements and more on mentality, describing qualities he believes separate elite athletes from the rest.

Ferdinand detailed the encounter in a post shared on Instagram, explaining why Gill stood out among the many athletes he has met.

“Shubman Gill – I meet a lot of sports stars on my travels but not many have shown me their curious mind, so quickly quite like Shubman.

“After sitting down and ordering our soft drinks I sensed curiosity through detailed questions about my football journey as a player, about leadership & relationships… all stemming from a huge desire (I felt) for Shubman to draw parallels where he could to apply to his world of cricket,” Ferdinand wrote.

Ferdinand’s comments centred on curiosity rather than talent. He framed Gill as someone actively searching for ways to improve, even outside his own sport.

“Now who knows what he takes from what I said or if anything I said resonates, but my point is for someone so young to quickly set about probing, questioning, exploring different things with the only aim being – to better himself,” he added.

For Ferdinand, the exchange reinforced a familiar pattern. The most successful athletes often share an openness to learn from different environments and experiences.

Rio Ferdinand praises Shubman Gill’s humility

Ferdinand further expanded on his admiration by focusing on Gill’s attitude in the same Instagram post.

“It was a refreshing moment given what he has achieved already at such a young age in the cricket world yet he exudes humility on a level that you would normally associate with a guy on the come up with not much achieved.

“I’ve been inspired to come to India again….this time I will be there in the not too distant future…India watch this space!!! See you soon, Prince,” Ferdinand concluded.

The praise stood out because it contrasted achievement with behaviour. Despite his rapid rise in cricket, Gill was described as grounded and self-aware.

Ferdinand’s reaction also hinted at the wider appeal of cricket’s next generation. Encounters like this help bridge sporting cultures, connecting football and cricket through shared values.
