But that pairing hasn’t come without its challenges. After accepting his $52.6 million player option, LeBron is set to become a free agent next summer, adding uncertainty to his future with the team.
The Lakers haven’t exactly built around LeBron recently. Bill Simmons even noted that James has taken a back seat to Luka in the team’s plans.
James knows the focus is shifting towards building around Doncic, but he still wants to compete for titles at this stage of his career. His future remains uncertain, but what does Luka make of it?

It’s clear that any issues between the Lakers and James don’t stem from Doncic. The young star has long admired James and doesn’t seem interested in challenging him for control of the team.

Ramona Shelburne also touched on how the Lakers have rolled out the welcome mat for Luka Doncic. The Slovenian star has been pleased with how the organisation has helped him settle in.

“We’ve spent a lot of time talking and getting to know each other over the last few months, and we’ve formed a strong working relationship.
“Championships are won when you work together. We all share that same goal.”
The Lakers clearly view Doncic as their franchise centrepiece moving forward. Their next big task is making sure he stays beyond his current deal.
A short-term extension this summer could pave the way for Doncic to eventually sign a $406 million contract with the Lakers down the line.
If they fail to convince him, though, he might decide to move on when that time comes. The front office needs to build around him properly, or they risk losing a player who could define an era in LA.
