Luis Suarez has hailed Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez on Instagram for a ‘tremendous’ match after Uruguay opened their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 3-1 win over Chile.

After a strong start to the new Premier League season for Liverpool, the hard-hitting goalscorer has taken that form onto the international stage with Uruguay – Ian Wright has also spoken about how people are making a ‘big mistake’ with Nunez.

Whilst Darwin Nunez didn’t get on the scoresheet, he did provide an assist for Nicolas de la Cruz to open the scoring and earned himself 73 minutes of action in what was Marcelo Bielsa’s first game in charge of the nation.

A long way to go, but it’s a positive start to Nunez wanting to take his home country to the 2026 USA and Mexico World Cup – he got a taste of it last year in Qatar.

The next stop is another World Cup qualifier for Nunez and Uruguay, with the 24-year-old set to come up against a couple of familiar Premier League faces in Moises Caicedo and Pervis Estupinan of Ecuador.

Nonetheless, when Nunez reacted on his Instragam to Uruguay’s win, Luis Suarez sent his fellow countryman a public message in the comments section.

Luis Suarez’s message to Darwin Nunez

“Way to go, Darwin, 👏🏼” said Suarez.

“Tremendous match and starting by winning is always important! Let’s go to the top with everything we have.”

Nunez will have a strong season for Liverpool

After settling in during his opening 12 months, Nunez will now be primed to kick on and prove his worth to the rest of the world.

In comparison to last season, he hasn’t managed to get himself sent off, so from that perspective, it’s a quite brilliant start, not forgetting that performance away at Newcastle United.

Not only for Liverpool, but Nunez himself, in the long run, it could prove to be defining because that type of performance was needed.
