Crystal Palace appear to have inspired Leicester after defeating the Foxes at Selhurst Park in dramatic fashion on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers was sacked on the Sunday after his side lost 2-1 in south London thanks to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s 94th minute winner, as the 75-year-old Roy Hodgson won his first game back in charge of the Eagles.

Now, Leicester seem keen to copy the south Londoners.

What’s the story?

Well – according to the IndependentLeicester had already been considering an experienced interim manager to replace Rodgers, and Hodgson‘s impact back at Crystal Palace has helped them make up their minds.

Now – somewhat remarkably – the Foxes are weighing up a move for Martin O’Neill.

The 71-year-old has been out of management since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2019.

However – like Hodgson at Crystal Palace – Leicester have worked with O’Neill before.

The Irishman held the reins at Leicester from 1995 to 2000 as he won the Football League Cup on two occasions, as well as the Football League First Division Play-Offs.

Leicester as said to view Premier League experience as a key factor in their hunt to replace Rodgers – with 359 Premier League games in management under his belt, O’Neill would certainly tick that box.

Why Crystal Palace situation is different to Leicester

In our view, hiring O’Neill would be a far bigger risk than Crystal Palace’s decision to appoint Hodgson.

The 75-year-old managed in the Premier League at Watford just last season, so he is still familiar with the modern game despite his age.

However, in regards to O’Neill, the Irishman hasn’t managed in the Premier League since 2013 during his time at Sunderland, so he may need some time to adjust.

Time is one thing Leicester do not have as they find themselves 19th in the Premier League with just nine games remaining – therefore, it would be a huge risk to hire O’Neill.
