Kai Trump’s first round at The ANNIKA didn’t go as planned, struggling to a tough scorecard in her debut on the LPGA Tour.
The tournament is being held at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida, and much of the early chatter has been around Trump’s presence in the field.
While she’s a talented player with a +0.5 handicap, her opening round didn’t reflect that ability. She shot an 83 to finish 13 over par, leaving her at the bottom of the leaderboard after day one.
The result added fuel to those who had already questioned whether she should have received an invite to the event.
But there’s another side to consider. Her appearance brought extra attention and viewership to the LPGA Tour at a time when it could use both.

Korda still hasn’t won this season, and Hull continues to fall short in major events, meaning neither has provided the spark the tour might have hoped for yet this year.
In that context, Kai Trump’s participation may have given the LPGA some much-needed momentum and visibility heading into next season. But her struggles also highlighted just how high the standard is on tour right now – even for someone with her background and talent.
Kai Trump’s 13-over round highlighted the depth of talent on the LPGA Tour
Trump’s round of 83 came on a day when 39 players broke par at Pelican Golf Club, with more than half the field carding rounds of even-par or better.
Haeran Ryu shot a six-under 64 to take the early lead, while Grace Kim was just one shot back after an opening-round 65.

Even two-under wasn’t enough to crack the top five. It was a strong day for scoring, but Trump finished well off the pace. Her round was four shots higher than anyone else in the field.
Kai Trump simply isn’t ready for this level yet
To be clear, this isn’t about her future potential. She’s already shown she can play at a high level, but Thursday made it obvious she’s not quite ready for this stage just yet.
If anything, her performance underlined how strong the LPGA Tour really is – far stronger than some people might realise.
The course wasn’t playing soft by any means. Still, over half the field managed par or better. That speaks volumes about the depth of talent out there right now.
Kai Trump’s opening round by the numbers at The ANNIKA
Trump was clearly proud of her efforts in the Sunshine State on Thursday, and so she should be.
While her score didn’t reflect it, there were some positives to take away from the round.
She managed to hit 8 out of 14 fairways and found 7 greens in regulation, which are solid numbers for someone making their first appearance at this level. But it was on the greens where things fell apart.
The rest of her game wasn’t far off, but putting made the difference. She’ll learn from this and be better prepared next time. And Thursday’s round will have shown just how high the standard is on the LPGA Tour.
