Jack Nicklaus has seen it all in golf. His 18 major championships give him legendary status, making every golf fan stop and listen when he offers advice.
Nicklaus is no longer considered the undisputed GOAT. Tiger Woods’ incredible career has sparked debate, but many fans still believe the man from Columbus, Ohio, is the greatest golfer of all time.
During and after his playing days, Nicklaus shared his golf knowledge through workshops, books and other formats that are now easily accessible online – and well worth exploring.
Nicklaus reveals the most important part of the golf swing

One lesson that stands out is his view on the single most important element of the swing – especially for amateurs looking to improve.
“The single most important element in swinging a golf club, is a steady head,” Nicklaus once said. “Without a steady head, all the other fundamentals go out the window.”
He added: “I like to feel like I have a stake through my body and driven all the way into the ground and then I rotate around that stake when I play a shot.
“It sets up a slight hip forward body angle, and that body angle is right here, and then I try and maintain that angle and my head position throughout the golf swing.”
For Nicklaus, it comes down to a simple visual: keep the head in one spot and rotate around it.
Why listening to the greats still matters
It is important to note that golf has evolved over time, just like many other sports. The game played today has some key differences in dynamics compared to Nicklaus’ era.
Still, learning from legends has always been part of the sport’s culture.
And while every player’s swing is unique, taking in advice from someone who’s been there at the very top can only help.
Besides, it’s not every day you get a tip from the Golden Bear himself.
