Tottenham have been knocked out of the Champions League after a dismal showing against AC Milan in which Spurs were lucky to have come out of the game with a 0-0 draw – and Italian media have criticised Richarlison for his display.

Richarlison, 25, was benched once again after impressing in wins over Chelsea and West Ham. But he was then left out of the side against Wolves last weekend, and was again on the bench against Milan. He came on with 20 minutes left.

His axe from the starting XI, especially with Son Heung-min struggling, has angered Richarlison. The Brazilian took aim at Antonio Conte in his post-match interview with TNT Sportssaying he simply cannot understand being left out.

So, a frustrating night for Spurs and even more so, for Richarlison. Italian media outlet Tutto Mercato Web gave their very honest verdict on his cameo role: “The worst way to enter the field, he lowers his head and wastes. Nervous too.”

Italian media have criticised Tottenham man Richarlison for his display

While it is perhaps understandable that Richarlison will have been frustrated by his omission from the starting XI, with Son preferred, he hardly proved he should have started when coming off the bench. He has been poor for Tottenham.

Yes, injury has hampered his progress. But given he is a player that cost £60m, Spurs should have got more out of their biggest summer signing. Playing 25 times for Spurs, Richarlison has scored in one game – a brace against Marseille.

Only three assists, as well. He has shown glimpses but he is far from a £60m player, right now. It seems to be that the attacker is not happy under Conte and if Spurs are to get the best out of the ex-Everton man, they need a new gaffer.
