Islam Makhachev believes Anthony Joshua has the physical tools to succeed in MMA, but says one key area must improve before any serious transition.
The welterweight champion shared his thoughts after revealing a lighthearted exchange with the former heavyweight boxing king.
Islam Makhachev tells Anthony Joshua to improve wrestling

In comments shared by ChampRDS, Makhachev described a conversation he had with Joshua.
“He tell me, ‘I want to make t-shirts,’ and I said, ‘Okay, I will give you approval. You can make it. But, you also have to come to Dagestan to improve your wrestling,'” Makhachev said.
The remark drew laughs, but the message underneath was clear. Joshua’s boxing pedigree is unquestioned, yet MMA demands a far broader skill set.
Dagestan has become synonymous with elite grappling and suffocating ground control, producing champions known for dominant wrestling foundations. Makhachev’s suggestion was not random. It was a blueprint.

Makhachev also outlined why Joshua’s physical attributes make the idea intriguing.
“This guy is huge. Very good striking. One of the best boxers in the world. If this big guy improves his wrestling, imagine how good he will be in MMA,” he added.
The praise was direct. Joshua’s size and knockout power would translate immediately in stand-up exchanges.
The challenge lies in defending takedowns, surviving grappling scrambles, and controlling opponents on the mat. History has shown that elite boxers entering MMA struggle most when forced into wrestling-heavy battles.
Makhachev’s point is simple. Add a legitimate ground game to Joshua’s existing strengths and the ceiling changes dramatically. Whether Joshua ever pursues that path remains speculative. For now, Makhachev has made his view known.
