Argentina are one of the biggest nations in all of football, and its history in the sport is reflected well in their most famous wins, accolades and the players the South American nation have produced.
La Albiceleste’s international records are some of the best in the entire sport, with Argentina winning two FIFA World Cups in 1978 and 1986 and claiming a joint-record 15 Copa America titles, their most recent coming in 2021 as Lionel Messi, arguably the game’s greatest ever player, inspired his nation to silverware.
Argentina head to Qatar this winter with the knowledge that Messi will be playing his last World Cup, and with the South American nation in outstanding international form, there’s a good chance that the 35-year-old could finally get his hands on football’s biggest prize.
Indeed, Argentina’s history in the game is rich, and here at HITC Football, we will delve into the Blue and White’s biggest wins on the international stage, with some results simply too incredible and big to likely ever happen again for the nation post-Messi.
Argentine record biggest South American football win in history

Argentina’s history with football has it’s roots at the very start of the modern version of the game, with the South American nation hosting both the first professional fixture on the continent as well as the first international contest, taking place in 1902 against Uruguay in a 6-0 win.
From the very start of football’s introduction to South America, Argentina and Uruguay were the two powerhouses of the sport, with La Celeste winning Olympic Gold in 1924 and 1928, the events many view as the precursor to the actual World Cup. And it’s no surprise that these two nations were the ones to meet in the first-ever final in 1930.
Whilst Argentina might have lost that occasion, La Albiceleste would earn their biggest win ever 12 years later in the 1942 South American championships, when a five-goal inspired Jose Moreno and four-goal display from Herminio Masantonio saw Ecuador lose 12-0.
Not only does this result still hold as Argentina’s biggest win on the international stage, but it also remains the largest win any South American nation has ever claimed, with giants Brazil and Uruguay not even coming close to the record set 80 years ago.
