Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Ian McGarry has delivered an update on Manchester City’s pursuit of a striker this summer, along with their view on buying Harry Kane.
It would make sense for City to sign striker this summer with Sergio Aguero set to depart after 10 years at the Etihad, and while Kane is reportedly keen to leave Spurs, he’s not the man at the top of their list.
Indeed, McGarry says that Kane is not a priority for City, and while they’ve not ruled themselves out of the race for the England captain, they would rather sign a young striker who could be developed for cheaper.
“We have been told that Kane is not a priority for them,” McGarry said
“Pep Guardiola believes that playing a full season and winning a Premier League title without much assistance from their main striker and record scorer Sergio Aguero that they’re well-suited to how they play and can compete without having to spend a huge amount of money with a central striker, which is something he did say in all fairness, in a recent press conference.
“What I’m told is that they would prefer to sign someone of a younger age who they can develop and someone who is obviously cheaper, not only in transfer fee, but also in wages, while using Gabriel Jesus or a false nine as Guardiola has been using this season. So for City it does not seem to be the case that Kane is someone they would compete with United for, but they’re not ruling out being in the race for him.”

To be fair to City, they don’t need to go out and spend over £100m on a new striker like Kane.
Would Kane improve Manchester City? Of course he would, but when you’re heading into a Champions League final after already winning two pieces of silverware, why do you need to spend big on a position that hasn’t proven to be a problem this season?
Yes, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus haven’t been firing on all cylinders, but the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan have all been banging in the goals this season.
City aren’t out of the Kane race, but it seems as though they’re not going to go all-out to sign him this summer.
