‘What I would say’: Manager suggests Tottenham will have to pay up if they want his player

Swansea City boss Steve Cooper has told BBC Sport that Tottenham Hotspur target Joe Rodon will only be allowed to leave if they receive a big fee for him.

Rodon is very much on Tottenham’s wishlist, but Swansea’s valuation of him is higher than Jose Mourinho’s side’s.

And Cooper feels that Tottenham will have to pay up if they really want the Welsh central defender.

“If we do lose an asset then our supporters will want to see some re-investment and some good players coming in,” the Swansea head coach said.

“What I would say about Joe or any other of our assets – and Joe is right up there as one of our biggest ones – it’s really important that if we do end up having to sell, then we get something to show for it.”

With Tottenham and Swansea so far apart in terms of their valuations, it could be difficult for the North London club to do a deal today.

Time is running out for Tottenham to get the move over the line, with Rodon now looking most likely to stay with Swansea.

That could be a blow to Spurs, who have been eager to bring in a central defender all summer, but have not had any success.

Tottenham are still well covered in central defence though, as they can already call upon the likes of Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez to play there.
