Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino was one of their worst performers against Liverpool yesterday.

Serious questions must be asked about the form of Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino after his showing at Anfield.
Merino has been kept out of Newcastle’s starting line-up recently, with Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame preferred, but he was involved again yesterday.
However, Merino missed his chance to impress, with Shelvey absent, as his display was woeful.

The summer signing struggled really badly, as Newcastle fell to a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool.
Merino continuously was guilty of giving the ball away, and he offered his defence very little protection.

Merino’s form has now become worrying for Newcastle, as his quality was clear to see at the start of the season.
The youngster looked like one of the Magpies’ best players in the early part of the campaign, and he appeared to be a wonderful addition to Rafael Benitez’s squad following his £8 million switch from Borussia Dortmund.
However, rumours of a departure may well have turned his head, as Merino’s performances levels have seriously dipped and his displays have to be becoming a concern for the Tynesiders.
