Back in 2015, then-19-year-old Celtic player Paul McMullan looked on course for a first-team call-up sooner rather than later.
After all, the attacker was scoring for fun in the Bhoys’ under-20 setup while he had found the net twice in his first three matches for loan club Stenhousemuir.
While there were plenty of Celtic youngsters vying for a chance under former manager Ronny Deila, McMullan looked like the real deal, which makes his current predicament all the more confusing.
Fast-forward two years and the 21-year-old is on loan again, this time at Championship side Dunfermline, but with just two league goals in 21 appearances – and seven in all competitions – it remains to be seen if Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers sees a long-term future for him at the club.
There is no doubting McMullan’s talent, but he has not sufficiently kicked on in the two years since he seemed to be closing in on the senior side.
His contract situation means it will be an interesting and potentially career-defining summer for the youngster. However Rodgers may be wise to at least give him another year to prove his worth.
