The Beatles are arguably the most famous band to have ever existed, and even they enjoyed playing a spot of tennis whenever they got the chance.

After all, it is a worldwide sport, despite having originated in the upper classes.

Nowadays, it is a sport that is far more accessible, but celebrities still flock to watch and play when their busy schedules allow.

Stars like Jim Carrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Zendaya and more have all been pictured at various events.

However, potentially the most famous tennis match ever played didn’t seem to include a single tennis player.

When The Beatles played tennis with Bob Dylan

In a piece written by The Guardian from earlier this year, they sought to recount the formation and subsequent success of the Isle of Wight festival.

It went from a ‘shabby’, small event into one that was pulling in hundreds of thousands of eager music fans.

Naturally, this was buoyed by the presence of some legendary figures, with Bob Dylan one such draw.

And, in 1969, The Beatles were actually in attendance not to perform, but to bear witness to Dylan’s show.

In what was likely an innocuous comment in the grand scheme of the engaging piece, the writer offered this tennis tidbit on how Dylan ended up playing tennis with three of The Beatles.

It read: “Suddenly we had a massive event that pulled in 150,000 people. George Harrison and Patti Boyd came to stay. John Lennon and Ringo arrived on the day. I’ll never forget watching Dylan playing tennis with three Beatles.”

The Beatles’ relationship with tennis

The Beatles are such a cultural giant, and their influence permeates almost every walk of life.

Tennis is clearly no different.

Adding to this iconic 1969 match played between Dylan and The Beatles, Ringo Starr went a step further in 1975, featuring in a celebrity tennis match in Johannesburg.

The Beatles also performed in tennis stadiums too, most notably Forest Hills and the Royal Tennis Hall in Stockholm.
