West Ham United lost 2-0 to Manchester City at Upton Park on the opening day of the season a decade ago.
With the new Premier League season just days away, HITC Sport has taken a look back at some of the lineups who took part in the curtain-raisers a decade ago.
This time, we are looking at what happened to the West Ham side that lost 2-0 on the opening day of the 2007/08 campaign at home to Manchester City…
Rob Green
Rob Green would remain with West Ham until 2012, leaving them for QPR upon the Hammers’ return to the top flight. After four years at Loftus Road, he joined Leeds in 2016, where he remains.
Jonathan Spector
Jonathan Spector stayed with the Irons until 2011 after making 101 league appearances for the club. He joined Birmingham and stayed at St Andrew’s for six years, leaving for Orlando City earlier this year.
Anton Ferdinand
Anton Ferdinand would be beginning his final full season with the Hammers on the day Manchester City won. He left for Sunderland in 2008, before spending two years with QPR from 2011. After spells in Turkey and in the non-league game, he joined Reading in 2014, and then Southend in 2016.
Matthew Upson
Matthew Upson
Matthew Upson made more appearances for West Ham than any of the other clubs he played for during his career. In 2011, he joined Stoke City and followed that up with a two year stay at Brighton and one season stints at Leicester and MK Dons before hanging up his boots in 2016.
George McCartney
Like Ferdinand, George McCartney would join Sunderland in the summer of 2008. After four years with the Black Cats, he would return to West Ham in 2012 – though he spent the previous campaign on loan at Upton Park after two loan stints at Leeds. He would leave again in 2014 and has not found another club since.
Luis Boa Morte
After leaving West Ham in 2011, Luis Boa Morte would enjoy short spells with AEL, Orlando Pirates and Chesterfield before retiring from playing in 2013. After performing various backroom roles for the likes of Fulham, Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal, he became manager of Portuguese third tier side Sintrense.
Mark Noble
The only player to start that day who is in contention to play against Manchester United on the opening day of this season is Mark Noble. The current Hammers skipper has made just over 400 appearances for the club in all competitions.
Lee Bowyer
Lee Bowyer would remain with the Irons until 2009 when he joined Birmingham. After a couple of years with the Blues, he moved to Ipswich in 2011, staying for one season. He is now the assistant manager at Charlton.
Freddie Ljungberg
After leaving West Ham in 2008, Freddie Ljungberg played for Seattle Sounders, Chicago Fire, Celtic, Shimizu S-Pulse and Mumbai City before retiring in 2014. His stints with those clubs were all brief, as he failed to reach double figures for the number of appearances with the latter three.
Bobby Zamora
Bobby Zamora
The play-off final hero of 2005 joined Fulham in 2008, and would help the Cottagers reach the UEFA Cup final during his time with the club. He joined QPR in 2012 – once again, scoring a play-off final winner during his time with the Hoops – before finishing his career with former club Brighton.
Craig Bellamy
It would be Manchester City who would take Craig Bellamy away from West Ham in 2009. After a loan spell at Cardiff, he joined Liverpool in 2011, before joining the Bluebirds permanently in 2012. He would retire in 2014.
