West Bromwich Albion kicked off their season with a 2-1 defeat away at Burnley on the opening day of the 2007/08 season.

With the new Premier League season just around the corner, HITC Sport has taken a look at some of the lineups sides put out on the opening day of the season a decade ago.

This time, we look at what happened to the West Brom side that started their clash with Burnley on the opening day of the 2007/08 Championship campaign…

Dean Kiely

West Brom would prove to be the final club of Dean Kiely’s career, as he retired in 2011 at the age of 40. He stayed at the Hawthorns as a coach before leaving in 2015, being appointed as goalkeeper coach at Norwich shortly after.

Carl Hoefkens

Carl Hoefkens was making his Baggies debut in the defeat to Burnley having joined from Stoke that summer. He left in 2009, spending the next six years in his native Belgium before finishing his career in Gibraltar.

Leon Barnett

Leon Barnett would remain on West Brom’s books until 2011, spending the next two years with Norwich. He has recently joined Northampton Town after three years with Wigan and one season with Bury.

Neil Clement

Neil Clement would stay with West Brom until 2010 when he was forced to retire due to injury. He made over 250 league appearances for the Baggies.

Tininho

The defeat to Burnley would be the only appearance Tininho would make for West Brom before he left permanently in 2008. He then spent the next eight years by serving a number of brief spells with clubs in Portugal and Romania before retiring in 2016.

Zoltan Gera

Zoltan Gera would be coming towards the end of his first spell with West Brom in 2007, leaving for Fulham one year later. He returned for a three-year spell in 2011, before returning to Hungary to play for Ferencvaros. The 38-year-old is still playing today.

Filipe Teixeira

Filipe Teixeira stayed with the Baggies until 2010. He would go on to play in Ukraine, Romania and UAE and now plays for Steaua.

Jonathan Greening

Jonathan Greening left West Brom for Fulham in 2010. After a brief spell at Craven Cottage, he spent three years with Nottingham Forest before dropping into the non-league game, briefly returning to the Football League for a short spell with York City in 2015.

Richard Chaplow

After an uninspiring spell at the Hawthorns, Richard Chaplow left West Brom for Preston in the 2008 January transfer window. He would subsequently play for Southampton and Millwall – having previously joined both on loan before signing permanently – as well as Ipswich Town and Doncaster Rovers. He now plays in America with Orange County.

Craig Beattie

Craig Beattie struggled during his time with West Brom, going out on loan three times while attached to the Baggies. He left for Swansea in 2009, and has since established himself as a journeyman, having since played for Watford, Hearts, St Johnstone, Barnet, Dundee, Zebbug Rangers, Ayr United and Stirling Albion. He is currently on Edinburgh City’s books.

Kevin Phillips

West Brom would provide Kevin Phillips with his second of five promotions out of the second tier before he brought the curtain down on his excellent career in 2014. He went on to play for Birmingham, Blackpool, Crystal Palace and Leicester City. He is now a coach at Derby, having performed a similar role with the Foxes previously.
