Unsurprisingly with Massimo Cellino at the helm, Leeds United were linked with a host of managers, even when another boss was in the job.
Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino
With working as a head coach under Massimo Cellino seemingly providing little job security, it is hardly a surprise that Leeds were linked with a number of managers in 2016, even when the position was not vacant.
But what has become of some of the names that were linked with the Elland Road job less than a year after the speculation?
Steve Kean
Steve Kean was linked with the Leeds post shortly before Cellino appointed Garry Monk, and supporters will surely be incredibly grateful that he did not decide to give the job to the former Blackburn boss. According to Tuttomercatoweb, Kean held talks about the post, but given his record at Ewood Park, it was surely wise to stay clear.
He is currently managing Brunei DPMM and also took charge of the Brunei national team in 2014.
Steve Kean
Fabio Cannavaro
The Italian enjoyed an illustrious playing career, but has certainly not been as decorated as a manager. Despite working with three teams so far since moving to the dugout, Leeds would have been the first European club he had taken charge of if anything came of reports from the Daily Mail in April that he was on Cellino’s radar.
He is now in charge of Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian, who were linked with a move for Leeds star Chris Wood in January (via ESPN).
Bristol Rovers manager Darrell Clarke
Darrell Clarke
While the previous two names were linked with the Leeds job at one stage, one manager who was formally approached about the position was Bristol Rovers boss Darrell Clarke, according to BBC Sport.
Clarke had led the Gas to back-to-back promotions but was linked with a departure ahead of their League One campaign. He ultimately decided to stay put and sign a new contract at the Memorial Stadium as the approach was rejected by the club (via BBC Sport).
He continues to impress, leading Rovers to mid-table in League One, so it would hardly be a surprise if Leeds was not the last club to approach the Gas hierarchy about their manager.
