West Ham fans have taken to Twitter to react after The Athletic revealed that Angelo Ogbonna will be given a contract extension.
What’s the story?
Well, this is a brilliant touch by West Ham – it oozes class.
Sadly, Ogbonna suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage during the 3-2 win over Liverpool, which looks set to potentially end his season.
After that news broke, there were plenty of question marks surrounding the 13-cap Italy international’s future, as his contract ends in June.
Would West Ham leave him unemployed during his recovery?
The answer is no.
In commendable fashion, the Hammers have chosen to look after the 33-year-old, and give him a contract extension regardless of whether he’s back playing by June.
Angelo Ogbonna decision shows West Ham are learning
Before David Moyes arrived, David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady could certainly be accused of lacking empathy.
They informed James Collins that he’d be leaving the club via email, despite the Welshman’s decade of service across two separate spells (Mirror).
Now, it seems as if GSB are learning from the errors of their ways – if the Ogbonna decision is anything to go by, that is.
The centre-back has made 201 appearances for West Ham since arriving from Juventus in a £10m deal back in 2015, scoring 13 goals.
Ogbonna has been a huge part of West Ham’s rise in recent years, and a contract extension is the least he deserves.
