Paul Merson has claimed that it’s going to be ‘interesting’ to see what Tottenham will do in the transfer market, as he made reference to Arsenal having to sell a ‘top-quality’ player when they first moved into the Emirates, as he told Sky Sports News (01/01/22 at 2:05 pm).

The Sky pundit shared that Tottenham have to provide Antonio Conte with money to spend this month because ‘you can trust him’.

Even before Spurs moved into their new stadium, they weren’t a team that would splash the cash under Daniel Levy.

But will that now change under Conte’s guidance? Or will they go down the route of what Arsenal used to do which was sell players, before buying?

That was touched upon by Merson, as he labelled Conte as one of the ‘top five’ managers in world football.

“I don’t know what the situation is with the finances,” said Merson. “But they have built a big stadium. We have seen it across the road at Arsenal and what happened at Arsenal. What they had to do.

“They had to sell a top-quality player every year to get by. Let alone buy one, so that will be interesting.

“You would like to think they would (find the funds) for this manager. They ended up getting a top, top draw manager. I would say he is in the top five in the world and where he has been.

“If you are going to do that and he’s coming here, then you have to give him the money. And you can trust him.”

Arsenal did their business in the summer and they probably won’t be as busy as Spurs during these coming weeks.

But how the north London duo act in the market might just be crucial in their quest to finish in the Champions League places at the end of the season.

Whilst Spurs may get rid of a number of their faltering stars, and then add in more quality, their rivals have the Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang situation to deal with.

If the Gabon star has indeed played his last game for the club, then Mikel Arteta might just need a fresh face to replace his recently-stripped captain.
