George Kittle struck a reassuring tone after picking up an ankle injury in the San Francisco 49ers’ 48–27 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
George Kittle suffered a rough-looking ankle injury in the second quarter of the San Francisco 49ers’ win over the Indianapolis Colts during Monday Night Football.
The tight end left the game in the second quarter and didn’t return, though he remained on the sideline for much of the second half. His post-game comments suggested the injury wasn’t as serious as it first appeared.
George Kittle says his ankle injury doesn’t seem too serious
George Kittle spoke to reporters after the game, giving a clear account of the play that led to his exit. After sustaining the injury, Kittle tried to play through it before deciding it was best to come out.
As far as the seriousness of the injury, Kittle quelled concerns about his health, but did suggest that he needed to know the prognosis before making a larger statement.
“It happened [in the] second quarter. We had a drive. I feel like I got hip dropped. Ankle got stuck in the grass or the cork turf. Really weird field.
“I tried to tape it up, went in the third quarter, and it just got worse from there. If I can’t run very fast or plant, then I think it’s a better option for my other tight ends to go in there and make plays.
“We won Monday Night Football on the road. It’s already after 12. Can’t wait to get on a plane and go home. My concern level? I don’t think it’s a high ankle sprain. We’ll take it one day at a time and go from there.”
San Francisco 49ers cannot afford to lose George Kittle so close to the playoffs
With their win over the Colts, the San Francisco 49ers moved to 11-4 for the season. They now sit behind the Seattle Seahawks, who are first in the NFC West.
With their record, the 49ers are virtually set to reach the playoffs. And as such, they will be very concerned about Kittle’s injury.
If Kittle’s injury isn’t very serious, the 49ers should still exercise caution and not play him in their remaining games this season.
Bringing back Kittle healthy in the playoffs should be their top priority, as they will find it very difficult to mount a run to the Super Bowl without him.
