Odds on Steven Gerrard becoming the next Glasgow Rangers manager have dropped to 8/1 with Bet Victor, as Graeme Murty’s Ibrox reign appears to be coming to an end. But according to one ex Celtic player, any approach from Rangers could put Gerrard in a difficult spot.
Being a Liverpudlian with Irish roots, it would be no surprise to learn that Gerrard has at least a slight affection for Rangers’ Old Firm rivals. And in quotes published by the Daily Record 18 months ago, Andy Lynch claimed the 37-year-old’s Celtic ties are stronger still.
Recalling a conversation he once had with Gerrard at a Liverpool game, the former Celtic captain said: “He is a real Celtic man.

“It was him who brought up the subject of Celtic and you could see he was pretty excited talking about it. He said ‘that’s my team, that’s who I support.’
“Obviously, I’m sure he’s got a great love for Liverpool and I’m not saying Celtic would have been a greater love. But he was very adamant about his passion for Celtic and said whenever he gets opportunities he would come up and see them because that was his team when he was younger.
“Then he told me he has a Celtic strip framed at home and it has Lynch on the back of it.
“I said to him ‘that’s my son’s shirt’. When Simon was at Celtic he played in Ronnie Moran’s testimonial at Anfield. I don’t know where Simon’s put Gerrard’s shirt but the fact we know where that Celtic jersey is says a lot.”

That’s not to rule Gerrard completely out of the Rangers running. After all, Joey Barton was far more candid about his own Celtic allegiance, and even he found Rangers too hard to turn down.
Besides, the chance to manage a club of Rangers’ history and stature would surely appeal to any budding manager, and it is one that Gerrard might relish.
Alternatively, he may wish to hold on a little longer, in the hope of succeeding his former Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, at Celtic Park.
